We recently returned to a garden we designed and built to add the final touches - the planting and lighting for a new section of the garden.
The plant list was created to be relatively low maintenance and also to provide a bridge between the existing garden and this new area. The design utilised this un-used area at the side of the house to create an intimate area where the clients could have a fire-pit a barbeque and enough room for friends and family to gather.
So the planting had to work with the existing plants with their cottage style feel and with the more formal and contemporary fell of the new area. The raised bed nearest the older part of the garden includes several flowering plants such as Achilleas and Knautia but also more architectural plants like Phormiums and also a few ornamental grasses.
The other beds utilise a similar mix with the large bed including a new Acer Palmatum that will over time fill the view created by one of the wooden frames. Low maintenance ground cover was utilised in the form of Heucheras, Brunnera and also ferns which were used in the shadier bed.
To add to the ambiance of the area and to enable the clients to continue getting use of the space in the evening we also added a limited selection of lighting into the wooden framework. Using spotlights to highlight the planting and to light up the main patio area we then added down lighters to add interest.
Now completed we are very pleased how this prohect has come to life from the original sketched and plans to the final garden itself complete with plants and lighting. The clients are also very pleased with what was a wasted area and have plenty of gatherings planned to make the most of it this Summer.
