Modern front garden - Mrs Marshall, Chelmsford
Brief: To create a new fresh entrance to the house that would reflect the modern interior. And also to create a fernery in the rear garden under established Laurel hedge. Description: Having a small space and a good budget meant we could invest in some higher end paving for this job. With smaller spaces it is always nice to be able to use materials that can create real impact. The design was very simple but this was important to keep the area feeling as large as possible and to provide some space for plants. The planting was between slabs and also in pots. The plants were a simple palette of silvers and greens, we also used some grasses to give some height.
Victorian twist - Mrs McLeod, Chelmsford
Brief: To update a tired looking front garden with a new boundary wall, paving and planting. Low maintenance was a priority. Description:This small space required some careful selection of materials to work alongside this Victorian property. We selected bricks for the walls and cobbles for the hard standing that worked with the house but also added light and interest. The planting was kept very simple using Ferns, Liriopes and Hebe’s to ensure minimum maintenance for this busy client.
Elegant entrance - Mrs Calvy, Chelmsford
Brief: To design, build and plant an elegant and stylish front facade that would compliment this stunning property. Description: We kept the hard landscaping simple for this one using complimentary bricks we created a new brick path, edged a new lawn area and low brick walls to border two new flower beds. Using box hedging gave the area instant formality and a classic look. This was then backed up with a confident planting plan relying on just white and green plants. The end result was a stunning façade that adds to the properties impressive nature.
Large contemporary garden - Mr Marshall, Chelmsford
Brief: To create an exciting, cool and contemporary garden that worked aesthetically well with the interior of the house, provided ample room for entertaining and relaxing but that also worked with the existing, well established borders. Description: The design was centred around three rectangles defined by dark granite slabs. Each of these held a feature, a raised artificial lawn, a large bespoke water feature and in a secluded corner an area for dining/relaxing. New planting was kept to two new beds within the new white granite paving. Grasses were use to add height and drama but remain low maintenance as requested. This garden was featured in the Society of Garden Designers review of the year for the innovative construction of the blue walls. We used marine ply wood and specialist paints to give the look of rendered walls whilst having flexibility to create openings and to keep costs down.
Creative decking - Mrs Waters, Galleywood
Brief: Our client wanted to make more use of the far end of their garden and make the most of the great views. Description: Our client was keen to use decking and from a construction aspect this helped us get over the uneven nature of this site. Rather than have a one level deck we decided to create two different areas with one raised higher. This also allowed us to introduce a small water feature using a waterfall running from one deck to the other. We edged the deck with bricks to allow easy mowing. Planting was only required in one shady corner of the garden exposed by the new work. We introduced shade tolerant plant such as Fatsia’s and some tall Miscanthus grasses in sunnier areas which worked well with back ground view.
